You don't think the US resembles an imperialist nation? The US military is deployed in more than 150 countries around the world. We've got around 50k still in Germany, over 35k in Japan, 10k in Italy, 28k in Korea, etc ... We impose our beliefs ideals on other nations like an 16th century monarchy.
And do you really think if the gov't tried to declare martial law that your hunting rifles and semi-auto hand guns are going to stop them? Please, they'd drop a bomb on you and then claim you blew yourself up in your meth lab.
No we are not....post WWII defense treaties obligated us to defend the nations and interests of imperial nations like the UK and France.
If by "impose" you mean we treated Germany, Italy, and Japan better than they would have had they won and keep South Korea all nice and safe then yes we impose our superior morality on the ungrateful world.
If the government declared martial law...it would work on cities, you can just contain a city and starve em out.
But occupying and controlling the vast land between cities? No chance...and yes hunting rifles in the hands of people that know the terrain better than anyone else and have the "give me liberty or give me death" attitude will remind any idiot that failed to learn the lesson of Vietnam (France got us that one) that an armed population is hard for any military to take out.
Besides, who ever said hunting rifles and hand guns was what the private arsenal of the US population is all that it is comprised of? Those things are for hunting and personal protection. Assault rifles, armor piercing sniper rounds, etc are just one part of the largest, most well armed built in insurgency in the history of mankind.
But your mention of the popular global
feeling of how some feel about America does bring up a feeling I sometimes entertain when hearing it...that maybe we should have pulled back into isolationism after WWII and let them all worry about themselves and Stalin....or maybe we should go full on imperialist and actually do what we get accused of...after all, my country means more to me than the life of every single man, woman, and child that hates us.
Agreed. The world's largest army... America 's
hunters! I had never thought about this before I read the following on another web site....
************************************************************************************************************
A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:
There were over 600,000 hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin .
Allow me to restate that number.
Over the last several months, Wisconsin 's hunters became the eighth largest army in the world.
More men under arms than in Iran .
More than in France and Germany combined.
These men deployed to the woods of a single American state to hunt with firearms, and no one was killed.
That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and Michigan 's 700,000 hunters,
all of whom have now returned home.
Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that
the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.
The point?
America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.
Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.
That's why all enemies, foreign and domestic, want to see us disarmed.
Food for thought when next we consider gun control...

As to weapons beyond personal protection or hunting, again I agree...it is amazing to me how much firepower many Americans out here in flyover country actually possess....weapons I have seen with my own eyes here in backwoods Kentucky. In fact, I can't think of anyone I know that doesn't have at least one gun and most have many. And more than you would think have automatic weapons. Twice a year, there is a machine gun shoot at Knob Creek, near Louisville. I'm sure there are others around the US. Folks come here from all over to shoot and blow things up. Those are just the legally owned, licensed automatic weapons held by private citizens in the US.
And in reference to the comment by Mr. Bull about imperialism...My country is not Imperialistic. That is just commie crap. Our military presence in all of those other countries is a deterrent for any aggression against our allies. It allowed our allies to rebuild after 2 world wars and a "police action" in the course of 35 years, all of which would have been lost to the forces of evil if not for us.
